Why choose Wild Wisco Waters as my river outfitter?
At Wild Wisco Waters, we don't just rent canoes and kayaks - we create unforgettable experiences on the Wisconsin River. Whether you're looking for a peaceful paddle, an overnight sandbar camping trip, or a guided fishing excursion, we provide the expertise, equipment, and local knowledge to make your adventure seamless and stress-free.
Can I bring my own canoe or kayak?
We don't offer individual boat shuttles if you are not planning to rent any equipment from us.
Is transportation provided?
Yes, meet us at the take out and we'll shuttle you up river to the boat landing with your gear.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety is our top priority. If weather conditions are unsafe, we will reschedule your trip or offer a full refund. Please see our complete weather cancellation policy here.
Are there age or weight restictions?
Our trips are open to people over the age of six and can accommodate most abilities. Please contact us for specific questions about safety and accessibility.
Are your trips pet friendly?
Yes! Dogs are welcome to join you on your paddle. We recommend using a doggy lifejacket to keep them safe and providing a towel for them to lay on in the canoe for comfort.
What should I bring on my paddle trip?
We recommend bringing sunscreen, a sunhat, water shoes, a reusable water bottle, and weather-appropriate clothing. You can find a complete packing list here.
Do I need prior paddling experience?
No experience needed! Our guided trips are beginner-friendly, and our knowledgeable staff will provide all the guidance you need.
What if I don't know how to swim?
That's okay! We provide life jackets for all guests, and our staff is trained to keep everyone safe on the water.
How long do the trips typically last?
Our trips vary from a few hours to a full day, depending on the adventure you choose. See individual trip offerings for me information on recommended timing.
Is there cellphone coverage incase of an emergency?
Yes, most guests have full cell coverage along the entirety of the river. Incase of an emergency, call 911.
How many people can you fit in a canoe or a kayak?
We have double capacity canoes and single capacity kayaks.
Are restrooms available during the trip?
There are portable restrooms at the meet up spot but none along the riverway.
What time do we need to return the boats by?
Since you're paddling back to your car, there is no specific end time as long as you're off the river by 6:00 p.m.
Do you rent camping gear as well?
We have three person tents available to rent along with dry bags. You can find a recommended packing list for your canoe camping trip here.
Are fireworks allowed?
No, they are not allowed due to their pollution.
What if our trip is cancelled due to high water or dangerous weather conditions?
We will be in touch via email and text message to keep you up to date on the river conditions. Since high water can be hazardous, we will cancel your trip and issue a full refund.
What if there is an emergency on the river?
If it’s a true emergency, call 911. Portage offers emergency river search and rescue services. In a life threatening emergency there is no charge for a rescue though your equipment will almost certainly be left behind on the islands. This is the best way to get help as soon as possible.

The Wisconsin River is normally a calm river, but rapidly changing weather conditions and the sometimes rapidly rising water levels can lead to dangerous situations on the river. Bringing a cell phone for emergency use is highly recommended.

If you do bring a phone, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure help will be able to find you. Make sure to always have a good idea of where you are by following along on a map or using GPS.
Do we need to make a reservation in advance?
Reservations are required 48 hours in advance and trips book up quickly during peak paddle season in July and August. Contact us if you missed the reservation window and we will see if we have availability.
